Bathukamma Significance & Spiritual Meaning

Bathukamma is a floral festival celebrated by women in Telangana and parts of Andhra Pradesh during the latter half of the monsoon. It honours Goddess Gauri and the bond between women and nature. Stacked flowers (bathukamma) are offered in a ritual that culminates in immersion in water.

Bathukamma Mythology & Legend

According to Telangana tradition, Bathukamma represents the living Goddess Gauri. The festival is linked to the legend of the goddess coming to her parents' home during this period. The circular arrangement of flowers symbolises the cycle of life and the feminine divine. It also celebrates the harvest and the region's floral diversity.

Bathukamma Puja Rituals & Vidhi

  1. Over nine days, women gather seasonal flowers and arrange them in concentric layers in a flat plate (taat).
  2. Each evening, women form circles around the bathukamma, sing songs (Bathukamma paatalu), and perform the ritual.
  3. On the final day (Saddula Bathukamma or Pedda Bathukamma), the bathukamma is carried in procession to a water body.
  4. The bathukamma is immersed with devotion; women exchange turmeric and kumkum and seek blessings.
  5. Wear traditional dress (saree or langa voni); prepare and share atukulu (beaten rice) and other prasad.
