The Dwadasa Jyotirlingas are the twelve most sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that Shiva first manifested himself as a Jyotirlinga (Column of Light) on the night of the Aridra Nakshatra. A pilgrimage to these twelve sites is considered to wash away all sins.
